Mamapreneur Spotlight: NursElet

Today I have the pleasure of interviewing Rupal, the mom and designer behind NursElet.  I first found NursElet the same way I find most small shop these days, on Instagram!  I thought this simple yet innovative product was perfect, as I'm always having the same issues she talks about while breastfeeding - not getting in a comfortable position because half the time I'm holding my shirt up from falling on Owen's face (poor guy!).

Introduce NursElet, it's been featured in Fit Pregnancy and Baby magazine, and even nominated by a local entrepreneurship center from San Francisco for a national contest, #innovateher, for an innovative product that could make womens’ lives easier.  Rupal also had the pleasure of meeting actress Alyssa Milano, who sent her a handwritten note to thank her for her product!

If you could start by introducing yourself, tell me a little about you as a mom and business owner.

My name is Rupal Asodaria.  I am a wife to my college sweet heart, mother to two children, and the owner of a small business, NursElet.  I live with my family in San Francisco bay area.

How did you come up with the idea for the NursElet?

I invented NursElet from my own breastfeeding challenges. They say necessity is the mother of invention, and for this homegrown brand, it's true!

I was fortunate enough to breastfeed both my children for two years, a beautiful gift I was so grateful to give them. I noticed, though, that I was slowly developing an acute back pain and neck strain due to improper posture and unclear latch while feeding my little one.

When nothing worked to relieve and soothe my pain, I had to invent something. Time, care, and trial-and-error produced the result: NursElet™, the essential bracelet for nursing moms.

What makes NursElet special?

It is a very convenient and easy to use nursing bracelet that helps breastfeeding mothers secure their shirt from falling on their baby and eliminates the need to hold the shirt while breastfeeding or pumping.  When she is finished nursing, it can become a bracelet to remind her which breast she needs to feed her baby during the next feeding.

This pretty and practical accessory helps simplify her early and important years of motherhood.  Nursing mothers love their NursElet and believe that this is a must have essential baby product. It makes me proud when I hear that my product has been making their breastfeeding journey easier and more comfortable, that’s the reason I have invented this product. I love our #NursEletMama

What styles inspire the fabrics you choose for your pieces?

Although I hold an MS in engineering, I have a strong desire for art since my childhood. I used to draw and color whenever I got the chance.  I believe that this deep-rooted artistic skill helps me to pick the fabric for NursElets.

What's your favorite part about running your own business?

Freedom. Though being your own boss is a challenging job, it’s worth it. I love my entrepreneurship. Luckily, my daddy who has been an entrepreneur his whole life is a huge support & source of guidance whenever I need.

What's it like being an entrepreneur and a mom?

To carry both titles, entrepreneur and a mom, and work from home is a challenging job. Fortunately, my toddler and kindergartener understand that their mama has to do her job and they try to cooperate -  at least sometimes :)

I try to involve them in my work whenever I can; that way I can keep them busy and get my work done. It’s a win-win situation. I have huge support from my husband who also works for me behind the scenes.

What does a day in your life look like?

I plan my day or week ahead. That helps me to prioritize and organize my work whether it is for my business or for my family.  I agree that time is a crucial element to run a business with little kids, and being a mom, sometimes I finish my work during their nap-time.

Also, I don’t forget to read books to my kids.

Where do you see your business in five years time?

I love this question. I want more people to recognize this home-grown brand NursElet which is founded by a mom. I look forward my products being carried in at least three major retail stores.  I would also love to have my own office in 5 years. Stay tuned for the next big thing!
